Kim dialed the number with shaky hands. "Oh, God, oh, God." She couldn't do this. She was going to pass out. He was going to be so devastated.
But she had to. Or else he'd find out by himself. Or worse, he'd never find out and get married to a whore who had no respect for him.
"Hey, it's Todd," he said on his voicemail. "You know what to do, so do it."
Kim took a deep breath. At the beep she began talking rapidly. "Hey, uh, Todd, it's me. Uh, Kim. Just…" What could she say? She couldn't just drop the bomb over voicemail! "Just call me when you get this, 'kay? It's urgent." She hung up, sat down on her bed, put her head in her hands and wept. Stupid John. Stupid Andrea. They were a match made in heaven – both sleazy. Poor, sweet Todd.
The phone rang. Kim picked it up. "Hello?"
"Domino's?" a guy's voice chirped.
Kim laughed despite herself. "Very funny, Todd."
"So, hey, what's so urgent?"
Kim took a deep breath and decided to rip off the Band-Aid. "Andrea's cheating on you. With John."
"What?" Todd snapped.
"I'm soooo sorry."
"Andrea wouldn't do that. Why the hell would you say that?"
Kim's jaw nearly hit the floor. "I saw some texts on John's phone. I know, I know. Don't ask. But he and Andrea were texting. Pretty skanky stuff, Todd. Apparently, whenever we've been at the shelter, they've been making like skanks."
"Maybe it's a different Andrea."
"A different Andrea Parks?"
Todd was silent for a long time, and Kim could picture his jaw pulsing. Her heart broke for him. "Todd, I'm so sorry."
"Shut up, okay, Kim?" He sounded so angry. "Look, that sucks about John, but I told you so, okay? And just because your dickhead boyfriend cheated on you, that doesn't mean you have to lie about Andrea!"
Kim blinked back tears. Todd never talked to her like that. He never talked to anybody like that. "Why would I lie about this?"
"You know what they say. Misery loves company." He hung up.
Kim sat in stunned silence. Todd was mad at her. He hated her, maybe. And for some reason, that hurt worse than John's cheating.
